One of the organisers of the Jualan Harapan Rakyat programme admits that it was a misstep on their part to display logos of the Agriculture and Agro-based Industry Ministry and Federal Agriculture Marketing Authority (Fama) in their banners without permission.
Nurani Resources Sdn Bhd managing director Ali Hassan, however, said the programme which seeks to sell wet goods at cheap prices will still be held, without using the agriculture ministry and Fama's logos.
Ali told Malaysiakini that the misstep of using the logos was because of a misconception.
"It was an agro bazaar, and we thought the agro bazaar was under Fama, which is under the agriculture ministry. That was our mistake," he said when contacted, adding that he had apologised to Fama for using their logo without permission.
However, he said he had only wanted to improve Fama's image as people often believe that goods sold at agro bazaars and farmer's markets are expensive.
As for the use of the Pakatan Harapan logo, Ali said they used it because a lot of people were raving about the new Harapan government, and that people had high hopes for cost of living to go down.
He said the name Jualan Harapan Rakyat will be maintained for the programme, but the lettering has been changed so as not to be similar to the one being used by the Harapan coalition.
"We will continue our programme because we want to help those in hardship. Our goal is not to make profits but to help.
"For example, ikan kembung (mackerel) can go up to RM20 per kg, but we sell for RM5 per kg. A (whole) chicken that goes for RM7 plus, we sell for RM5 plus," he said.
The spotlight fell on the programme after Muar MP Syed Saddiq Syed Abdul Rahman questioned why the Harapan coalition was misusing government machinery.
The ministry and Fama have both clarified that they were not involved.
They lauded the programme, but warned against the further use of their logo without permission. - Mkini
