PAS moots 'unity government' again but for Perlis

PAS has offered to form a state unity government with BN to resolve the crisis over the appointment of the Perlis menteri besar, following similar proposals the party made for Perak and Kedah.
Perlis PAS leader Mohd Shukri Ramli (above) said there was no indication that the matter would be resolved soon and was, in fact, becoming more complicated.
Yesterday, Perlis BN submitted to the palace the names of 11 lawmakers - including former Perlis BN chief and Arau MP Shahidan Kassim - for menteri besar.
Perlis BN is against the palace's decision to appoint Azlan Man for a second-term as menteri besar.
Mohd Shukri said the submission of 11 names was inappropriate.
"A menteri besar has (already) been appointed with the consent of the Perlis Raja," he said, according to Bernama.
As such, Mohd Shukri said a unity government would benefit the people of Perlis.
"Perlis PAS does not demand any position in the state government and it is also advising PKR not to claim the menteri besar position which has (already) been consented to by His Majesty," he said.
Perlis ruler Tuanku Syed Sirajuddin Putra Jamalullail (below) had sworn-in Azlan as menteri besar on May 24, although the latter did not have the backing of his nine fellow BN lawmakers.
BN commands a two-thirds majority in the 15-seat Perlis legislative assembly.
Conventionally, Azlan can only be removed if it can be proven in the legislative assembly that he does have the support of the majority of assemblypersons.
However, it is unsure if Azlan can even appoint a speaker for the legislative assembly sitting without backing from the lawmakers.
Similar situation
Perlis PAS' current position is similar to the PAS central committee's proposal for a "no opposition" unity government in Perak after it was clear that no party or coalition had the outright majority in the legislative assembly following the May 9 polls.
The deadlock was broken after two BN lawmakers pledged support for Ahmad Faizal Azumu from Pakatan Harapan.
A similar situation occurred in Kedah, with the Pakatan Harapan coalition winning just as many seats as BN and PAS combined, leading to a unity government offer from PAS.
Eventually, the Kedah palace was satisfied that Mukhriz Mahathir had the support of the majority and swore him in as menteri besar.
Mukhriz said efforts to reach a consensus with opposition lawmakers on a state legislative assembly speaker are underway. -Mkini
