Umno wants Putrajaya to stop a witch hunt in the civil service for those who support BN.
Highlighting remarks by Prime Minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad and Negeri Sembilan Menteri Besar Aminuddin Harun, the Umno communications unit said such a hunt was oppressive.
"We are worried that this can be construed as a threat and oppression to the civil service in an attempt to deprive them of their constitutional and democratic right to freedom of association and the freedom of who they want to support.
"We urge the Pakatan Harapan government to respect these rights and to treat the civil service fairly.
"If the country is to be united, to progress and to remain democratic, such blatant political witch hunts and vengeance must stop," the unit said in a statement today.
Mahathir and Aminuddin had both made comments critical of civil servants who campaigned for BN.
Mahathir had said that civil servants had a right to vote for whom they support, but should not have taken part in election campaigning.
The Umno unit said when BN was in power, opposition supporters in the civil service were never victimised as freedom of association was constitutionally enshrined.
"BN did not force them to support our party nor victimise them due to their political stance...
"We had only asked them to serve the government of the day with loyalty and not let politics interfere with their work," the unit added. -Mkini
