KUALA LUMPUR – Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad will raise the 1Malaysia Development Bhd (1MDB) issue and anti-graft related measures in the upcoming Anti-Corruption Summit 2018.
The Prime Minister will touch on these matters during his keynote address at the summit here on Oct 30, which has the theme of ‘Good Governance and Integrity for Sustainable Business Growth.”
Transparency International Malaysia president Datuk Akhbar Satar said : “Since 1MDB (matter) is not complete (yet to be resolved) he will touch on it.
(In relation to probe into former 1MDB subsidiary) SRC International, an ex-prime minister (Datuk Seri Najib Razak) was also arrested.
There will be other suspects (sought). They (authorities) may come up with other charges on other areas linked to 1MDB. Akhbar was referring to Najib being hit with multiple charges involving SRC International.
Akhbar was speaking during a pre-summit announcement event here today.
Also present was Business Integrity Alliance Bhd president Mohd Shah Hashim and Abdul Rasid Majid, from corporate governance specialist Aram Global Sdn Bhd.
Akhbar said the summit will also touch on other pertinent issues like the Attorney-General’s (AG) role and the proposal to put the post directly under Parliament to improve governance and integrity.
“This is very important as the AG (Tommy Thomas) is the one who determines whether to prosecute (graft-related cases as well as other criminal cases) or not.
“We have yet to hear from the government (over the proposal) to place him directly under the Parliament,” he said.
Akhbar said this issue needs to be seriously looked into as the previous AG (Tan Sri Abdul Gani Patail) was removed from his post in the course of the 1MDB probe in the previous administration.
He added that the summit would also be a way for the Malaysian public and private sector to learn effective anti-graft measures from their foreign counterparts.
He said this can be seen with the summit attendance of Agus Rahardjo, the chairman of the globally-respected Indonesian Corruption Eradication Commission.
At the upcoming summit which is expected to see an attendance of 1,300 participants locally and abroad, Akhbar will deliver the opening speech and Economic Affairs Minister Datuk Seri Mohamed Azmin Ali will deliver the closing remarks.
Other speakers confirmed to be attending the summit are National Centre for Governance, Integrity and Anti-Corruption (GIACC) Tan Sri Abu Kassim Mohamed, Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) deputy chief commissioner Datuk Shamsun Baharin, and Immigration director-general Datuk Seri Mustafar Ali.
According to a copy of the itinerary for the summit, topics that would be covered are further steps needed to curb corruption, need for better protection against whistleblowers, political financing legislation, and effectiveness of anti-bribery policies in public and private sectors.
