PETALING JAYA: The eldest daughter of Dr Mahathir Mohamad today hit out at Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail, after the deputy prime minister criticised those who backed the LGBT community, saying it was haram to support them.
Marina Mahathir, who is well known for her defence of the LGBT community, was responding to the PKR president’s interview with a radio station, in which she said she would not condone the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender community as their lifestyle was in conflict with Islamic teachings.
“Did you just call a lot of people including me who have shown the slightest bit of compassion towards marginalised people in our society haram?” Marina asked on Twitter.
Wan Azizah, when asked about her recent call to the LGBT community not to practise their lifestyle publicly, said she was standing by her comments.
“Most important this, for us, as a Muslim, it is haram… I do not condone it,” Wan Azizah told business station BFM this morning.
She said the new government would also not change the stance against homosexual lifestyle.
“That is part of the thing, you see it was used against my husband but the thing is that it was never used against anyone else.
“Islam is the religion of the federation, so I think certain things are difficult for me to cross,” she added.
This is Marina’s second criticism of Wan Azizah.
On Aug 1, she questioned the PKR leader for saying there was no solid case to take action against a 41-year-old man over his marriage with a 11-year-old girl.
“How much more water tight evidence do we need?” Marina had asked on Facebook.
“This 41-year-old man has been interested in her since she was 7 and married her at 11… that’s all the evidence you need!” -FMT
