Yoursay: Independent candidate should give Anwar run for his money

YOURSAY | ‘Perhaps one should vote for Chan to show the politicians that power rests in people's hands.’
P Dev Anand Pillai: It is wonderful to note that we have very capable individuals out there who are very concerned and interested in ensuring that we, the people, do not allow the politicians to lead us by the noose anymore.
We rose up to change a federal administration which we thought we could not and brought back a former prime minister to lead us again, and now it is time for the people of Port Dickson who were indirectly cheated by a former highly decorated naval officer to give this brave man called Stevie Chan a chance by rising up again to make a wave high enough to defeat a giant like Anwar Ibrahim.
Anonymous_e3e72c1b: I like Port Dickson by-election hopeful Chan’s manifesto and his stated reasons for running.
If I were a Port Dickson voter, I would take Chan's candidacy seriously.
Apart from the “PD Move” factor, we need more ordinary people in Parliament like Chan, who don't come from political dynasties, who have worked blue collar jobs and who understand, through lived experience, the everyday concerns of the 99 percent.
Abdullah Karim: Our premier is 93 years old. Is it not right to have a succession plan that is in place if anything (God forbid) happens to Prime Minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad?
I have considered the likes of Home Minister Muhyiddin Yassin, and Defence Minister Mohamad Sabu as potential prime ministerial material, but if Pakatan Harapan component parties have already agreed for Anwar to eventually become the next prime minister, it is only right that certain actions are to happen - like the Port Dickson by-election.
Constitutional Supremacy: The heading seems to do injustice to the potential independent candidate. We know many people have worked in bars to earn money to pursue their career or education.
The manifesto is well-written. The point of penalising MPs who vacate seats for no reason has some merit.
His entry will move democracy forward. Umno/BN has pulled out, although it was the obvious choice to mount a challenge having done fairly well in the last election.
Earlier, Parti Rakyat Malaysia had said it may contest. It would be good if a single candidate challenges Anwar, and the others support him.
It is hoped that the National Patriots Association will also lend its support or put up a candidate in consultation with other candidates.
The negotiation can be earlier or even on nomination day to have a single opposition candidate. However, PAS may also contest.
NNFC: Although we know little of Chan, I think he has a point on the Port Dickson MP vacating his seat for Anwar.
I agree that the laws are being abused, and so democracy is not what we hope it to be. It might be a good option to vote Chan to balance power a little and to show the politicians that power actually rests in the people's hands, not the politician.
Jinhua: Chan, I applaud your gumption and your rights. But if the mainstream political parties don't compete, could you please consider withdrawing to help save the taxpayers’ money?
I don't think your ego needs stroking. If you have the will to do good, start an NGO or join one and fight for what you think is right. Unless you intend to capitalise on the media frenzy to promote yourself - win or lose.
Well That’s Fantastic: How blind is everyone who is against the "Port Dickson Move"? Didn't we all live through the same events of Najib Razak and company making sure they held the election before Anwar was due to be released?
How about the simple fact that he was in there with so many unanswered questions? Anyone who saw the injustice would gladly pave the way for Anwar.
Malaysianmalaysian: Good on you, Chan. I agree with your take on the issue, in which you said, “Malaysians voted for Pakatan Harapan not only to reject the old politics of corruption and hate, but also to alleviate their concerns over stagnating income growth, the high cost of living, rising inequality, the quality of public education and more.”
Thank you for doing this for the rakyat. If needed, I'm sure the rakyat will support you through crowdfunding.
Abasir: I hope you give Anwar a run for his money, Chan. I hope the voters see you as someone more reliable than the previous MP. And I hope you start meeting and talking to the people of PD so that they get to know you.
For all you know, the protest votes that come your way may be enough to send Anwar on a speaking tour in faraway countries.
Anonymous_5609e49b: Malaysians easily forget. We must view the picture as a whole.
Anwar was put into such a situation by BN; it was not of his own doing. If BN had not lost in the GE14, he might never be a free man. He could have been re-arrested on a sodomy charge.
He has no choice but to re-enter the race this way, due to the fact that BN lost and he was able to come out only after GE14.
This one move in Port Dickson is rectifying the injustice and deprivation he has suffered. It is to reinstate the long-delayed chance for him to be the leader of the country.
Realist: Chan, I hope you win, and if not, chalk up a considerable number of votes to remind the winner that he has to honour the Harapan manifesto and not pursue other narrow, personal or communal agenda.
Sleepy: Many Malaysians voted out BN in the 14th general election (GE14), not because of our undying support for Anwar but rather our undying love for the country, which we know can do much better. - Mkini
