PAS, Umno MPs unite to attack 'racist' Waythamoorthy

PARLIAMENT | PAS and Umno lawmakers united in their attacks of Minister in the Prime Minister Department P Waythamoorthy over the latter’s stand on the International Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Racial Discrimination (Icerd).
Che Abdullah Mat Nawi (PAS-Tumpat) led a chant of “racist! racist!” against Waythamoorthy during the latter’s speech to wind-up debate of the Supply Bill 2019.
Che Abdullah’s chant was repeated across the opposition’s bench.
The outcry was triggered by Waythamoorthy’s claim that the previous BN government had discriminated against Indians in Malaysia.
Waythamoorthy earlier said the government will not proceed to ratify ICERD if it involves any requirement to amend or abolish Article 153 under the Federal Constitution.
He said the matter has currently been referred to the Attorney-General’s Chambers and any decision would only be made pending its outcome.
“This matter has been referred for the AG’s consideration… If it was found there was any need to amend Article 153, the government will not ratify ICERD,” said Waythamoorthy in his speech to the wind-up debate of the Supply Bill 2019.

Azalina Othman (BN-Pengerang), Reezal Merican Naina Merican (BN-Kepala Batas), Ismail Sabri Yaakob (BN-Bera) were among leaders who had raised questions over the government's move to ratify the UN human rights instrument.
