KUALA LUMPUR: Terrorism propaganda and elements that threaten and affect the peace will be among the matters included in the defence white paper planned by the government, says Defence Minister Mohamad Sabu.
He said the white paper would be extensive and inform the people of the country’s defence policy for the short and long term.
“We are planning for the next 10 years. During that period, it may be revised from time to time.
“The people will also want to know about the country’s defence and their responsibilities relating to national defence,” he said in a press conference after chairing a round table meeting on the matter at Wisma Perwira here yesterday.
The conference was also attended by Home Minister Muhyiddin Yassin, Communications and Multimedia Minister Gobind Singh Deo, Economic Affairs Minister Mohamed Azmin Ali and Chief Secretary to the Government Ismail Bakar.
Mohamad was previously reported as saying that a white paper on defence would be tabled in Parliament in July. He said the document would not be classified as secret but would be open for viewing to all Malaysians.
The paper would provide information to the people to make the ministry more accountable for its actions.
Speaking yesterday, Mohamad said the home, foreign, communications and multimedia, and economic affairs ministries would each play a role according to their respective portfolios.
As for the defence ministry, he said, any form of terrorism would be examined in greater detail through the white paper, including regional issues with other Asean partners.
The implementation of the white paper would also be linked to national, foreign and domestic security policies, he said.
“This is to ensure that all international agreements and domestic laws are adhered to,” he said. -FMT
