Illogical for Kula to review RM1,100 minimum wage - PSM

SEMENYIH POLLS
 | PSM today criticised Human Resources Minister M Kulasegaran for proposing to set a minimum wage structure for different industries because the current rate of RM1,100 is too high for some sectors.

At a press conference, PSM central committee member S Arutchelvan called it an illogical proposal as the minimum wage only took effect this year.
He said the minister's recent views showed he favours the employers instead of safeguarding the interest of the workers.
"Better if the human resources minister (post) is changed to 'minister who takes care of employers'," said Arutchelvan, who is on a campaign trail with the PSM candidate for the Semenyih by-election, Nik Aziz Afiq Abdul.
On Feb 25, Kulasegaran said his ministry was looking into more “relevant” basic salaries for different sectors.
The Penang division of the Malaysian Trades Union Congress (MTUC) said it was shocked with Kulasegaran's alleged remark that the current RM1,100 minimum wage is too high for some sectors.
Putrajaya originally set the minimum wage at RM1,050 across the board, but later increased it to RM1,100.
Arutchelvan said PSM wants Pakatan Harapan government to increase the minimum wage to RM1,500 as pledged in its election manifesto.

He called upon workers to reject the minister who, he said, continues to make U-turns.
PSM today launched its minimum wages hotline for people to lodge complaints nationwide and monitor the level of compliance by employers.
According to PSM worker bureau chief M Sivaranjani, some employers have failed to observe the latest RM1,100 minimum wage which was passed in the Parliament.  - Mkini
