Police bust protection syndicate, seven arrested in Selangor

KUALA LANGAT: Police have crippled a protection syndicate with the arrest of seven men at Teluk Panglima Garang here.
Selangor CID chief Senior Asst Comm Fadzil Ahmat said following a tip-off, police from the Selangor Serious Crimes unit (D9) conducted several Ops Cantas Khas raids at around 3.30pm and 5pm on Monday (Feb 25).
"We arrested seven men aged between 18 and 30 in these raids. All these men were believed to be members of the 08 Gang involved in extortion of the owner of an poultry farm under construction here on Feb 11," he said in a statement on Wednesday (Feb 27).
He added that the gang's modus operandi was to target construction sites and offer them protection in return for cash.
"If the site manager or land owner refuses to pay for protection, the gang would resort to committing robberies at the sites to force them to pay for the security services," he said.
SAC Fadzil added that the group was believed to have been extorting several sites in Sepang, Petaling Jaya and Serdang.
SAC Fadzul added that the suspects have been remanded for seven days to help with investigations under Section 394 of the Penal Code for causing hurt during a robbery.
He also urged the public to channel information on extortion activities by secret societies through the Selangor police Whatsapp hotline at 017-2847611.- Star
