Cabinet to take back wet markets from foreigners

Cabinet will form a new committee to deal with foreigners who are "controlling" wholesale and wet markets.
Agriculture and Agro-based Industries Minister Salahuddin Ayub said among the resulting problems are increase in cost of food, profiteering, safety problems and competition with local traders.
The new committee would comprise officers from his ministry, the Home Affairs Ministry, Domestic Trade and Consumer Affairs Ministry, and Federal Territories Ministry.
"These foreign traders are active in wholesale and wet markets, which requires joint efforts from these four ministries," he told reporters at the Parliament lobby today.
He said the committee is expected to collect data and make recommendations by the end of the month.
Following this, the respective ministers will meet to decide on the next course of action. - Mkini
