Man loses cool, chases cop with a knife in Klang

KLANG: A man, suspected to be under the influence of drugs, was shot after he chased a policeman with a knife when he was unable to withdraw money from a bank here.
South Klang OCPD Asst Comm Shamsul Amar Ramli said that the incident occurred on Tuesday (April 2) afternoon, after the suspect lost his cool near a bank in Bukit Tinggi here.
"A police team was dispatched to the bank at around 2pm where the suspect ran amok.
"Security guards there said the suspect threatened to return at 2pm if he could not withdraw his money," ACP Shamsul Amar said.
He added that the police found the suspect at the bank and one of the policemen tried to diffuse the situation.
"He tried to calm the suspect down for 20 minutes, but the suspect became aggressive and chased the policeman with a knife. Shots were fired in self-defence.
"A total of four shots were discharged, two hitting the suspect's stomach," said ACP Shamsul Amar.
The suspect, aged 41, was sent to hospital for treatment. The policeman was uninjured.
"Checks on the suspect led to the seizure of a seven-inch switchblade and a packet believed to contain drugs.
"The man is also believed to be under the influence of drugs," he said.
"Investigations showed that the suspect, who came to withdraw money, did not have any money in his account," he added.
The case is being investigated under Section 307 of the Penal Code for attempted murder.- Star
