KOTA KINABALU: Parti Bersatu Sabah (PBS) today demanded a follow-up investigation on the issuance of documents to illegal immigrants, especially with more new evidence surfacing.
Calling for the setting up of a royal commission of inquiry (RCI), specifically on matters related to the issuance of citizenship in Sabah, PBS president Maximus Ongkili said it was time to find a permanent solution to the long-standing problem.
“A lot of evidence was given during the first RCI, such as the issuance of documents and the existence of ‘Projek IC’, an infamous syndicate back in the 1980s, and many recommendations were given by the then commission.
“But to date, nothing concrete has come out of it.
“PBS hopes that the RCI on citizenship will be able to make things right,” he said after chairing the PBS Supreme Council meeting at the party’s headquarters in Penampang today.
Ongkili said the proposed RCI on citizenship was in response to the numerous public complaints and evidence published in the media on the matter recently.
He added that apart from identification documents, the RCI on citizenship must also investigate the issuance of birth certificates and the granting of permanent residence (PR) status to non-Malaysians.
He said those granted PR status will automatically become Malaysian citizens after five years.
“This includes the implications of the alleged project by Warisan, which, of course, they’ve denied. We believe the police are probing these allegations.
“We are also calling for a RCI on the citizenship issue with new evidence coming up. Although these were raised during the previous RCI sitting, till today no proper solution has been given.
“We want a proper and transparent investigation by the police on these matters.”
Stressing that the matter cannot be taken lightly, he said through this new RCI on citizenship, it is hoped they would be able to get to the root of the problem. - FMT
