Police obstruction during Rantau polls case set for mention on Aug 23


SEREMBAN: The Magistrate's Court here has fixed Aug 23 for case management of a case involving five individualswho allegedly obstructed a policeman from carrying out his duties during the Rantau by-election in April.
Magistrate V. Vanita fixed the date following a request by the defence to enable them to peruse documents they received from the prosecution team.
S. Vigane Swaran, 52; SR Mangaswaran, 37; M. Sega Sivakumar, 37; and SM Arun and A. Yeohvan Louis, both 25, had on July 18 claimed trial to the charge.
The five were charged with deliberately obstructing Sjn Yusof Md Medak from carrying out his duties by inspecting the boot of his patrol car at SRJK Chung Hua in Rantau around 6pm on April 13.
They were charged under Section 186 of the Penal Code, which was read together with Section 34 of the same legislation.
Offenders can be jailed up to two years and fined up to RM10,000 or both upon conviction.
They were slapped with an alternative charge of obstructing the policeman from carrying out his duties to escort ballot boxes.
The offence was said to have been committed at the same place and time.
They were charged under Section 341 of the Penal Code read together with Section 34.
Offenders can be jailed up to a month or fined RM1,000 or both.
The court had allowed the accused to be released on a bail of RM2,000 each.
Lawyer Haresh Mahadevan represented Vigane, Mangaswaran and Sega while K. Indran appeared for Arun and S. Karthigesan for Yeohvan. - Star
