PETALING JAYA: Failure of the privately-owned Sea Park wet market management to control the crowd and ensure social distancing has forced the Petaling Jaya City Council to order a closure.
The directive takes effect from Wednesday (April 29), until further notice.
Mayor Datuk Mohd Sayuthi Bakar said the market management was given several warnings prior to the closure notice.
Mohd Sayuthi said he was irked by the lackadaisical attitude by the management and was left with no choice.
“We have ordered the market to close until the management can provide a plan on how they are going to control the crowd such as getting assistance from Rela personnel.
“They should give priority to the public’s health and safety.
“We have received numerous complaints from the public.
“If the management can comply with the rules, we will allow it to resume operation as early as tomorrow (April 30), ” said Mohd Sayuthi.
He said traders should not focus solely on profits but the safety of their customers as well.
Councillor Farhan Haziq Mohamed said the market was carrying out cleaning exercise during his visit there.
“The market was not practising social distancing or crowd control.
"We were taken aback to see the crowded situation, ” he said.
A check at the market saw traders and their workers actively cleaning up the premises. - Star
