Dr M: Some in Bersatu willing to work with thieves for benefits

Malaysiakini

Disputed Bersatu chairperson Dr Mahathir Mohamad today lamented the willingness of some in his party to "work with thieves" as long as they can benefit from it.
In a blog post titled "Attitude", Mahathir said it appears that many Malaysians are willing to accept leaders who steal billions from the government.
"Among them are Bersatu leaders and members who previously joined Bersatu supposedly to bring down a prime minister who was stealing billions from the government.
"They cooperated with the opposition which had a similar goal. The people gave them victory as they believed in their sincerity of the promises made by the party and their leaders.
"After winning, the Bersatu president (Muhyiddin Yassin) planned with the defeated parties to quit Harapan and bring down the Harapan government.
"With the support of thieving leaders, the Bersatu president became prime minister with the defeated parties in a coalition called 'Perikatan Nasional'," he said.
Despite these developments, the Langkawi MP lamented that Bersatu members stood by and did nothing.
"What do the other Bersatu leaders say? Are they willing to accept thieves as leaders? It's okay. As long as there are benefits.
"What has become of the past pledge to fight and bring down kleptocratic leaders?
"Oh, that was only a pledge to get voters' support. Now, it can be forgotten," he said.

Mahathir added that such an attitude would set Bersatu on a path of destruction.
"With this, Bersatu will be destroyed. With that, what will become of the struggle to save Malays from kleptocratic leaders?
"That is Bersatu's problem. As long as there are benefits, then it is okay. In future, people will no longer believe in us. Is that okay?
"That is the future. That is the attitude of a number of some Bersatu leaders and members," he added.
Based on the status quo, Muhyiddin has the support of 113 MPs, a two-seat majority in the 222-member Dewan Rakyat.
Muhyiddin was sworn in as the new prime minister on March 1 after Mahathir refused to lead a new coalition he put together comprising Bersatu, BN, PAS, GPS, PBS and STAR.
Mahathir has indicated he plans to take Bersatu back to Pakatan Harapan but at present, Muhyiddin appears to have the upper hand in the party. - Mkini
