Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS) has offered a scholarship to Veveonah Mosibin to pursue a bachelor’s degree at the university.
Veveonah previously made headlines after she posted a video of herself climbing a tree to obtain decent enough Internet connection to complete several online examinations.
In a Facebook post today, UMS vice-chancellor Taufiq Yap Yun Hin announced the university’s offer to the 18-year-old.
“UMS is pleased to offer a scholarship to Veveonah Mosibin, who has completed her Asasi Sains (Foundation in Science) course at UMS, to continue her bachelor’s degree at UMS [...]
“Veveonah is a smart student and has always been proactive during her course. We hope Veveonah will succeed in her studies. Congratulations Veveonah!” he wrote.
The post was accompanied by photographs of Yap and Veveonah.
Veveonah’s YouTube video, entitled “24 Hours On Tree | Challenge”, depicted the lengths she had to go through just to complete her papers as she had no internet connection in her village.
It has garnered more than 600,000 views since it was posted on June 12.
While praised for her determination, her situation also highlighted the infrastructure disparities faced by those living in rural Sabah.
Hailing from Kampung Sabanalang in Pitas, the straight-A student was previously quoted in news reports saying she did not have electricity, water supply or television at home.
After her video got picked up in the news, the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) announced that it planned to build a telecommunications tower near Veveonah’s village to enable 4G connection. - Mkini
