PARLIAMENT | Segambut MP Hannah Yeoh has questioned why the Women, Family and Community Development Ministry has yet to appoint a chief executive officer for the National Welfare Foundation (YKN) nearly fourth months after the previous CEO's contract ended on March 30.
"Clearly, the position needs to be filled as soon as possible because the role of the agency is important to help the people after the outbreak of the Covid-19 epidemic," she said.
Yeoh (above), who is also a former deputy minister in the ministry, also questioned the PN government's hasty action to end Asmah Ibrahim's service.
“It has been four months since the position was occupied.
"So what was the real goal or need that was so urgent on March 31 for YKN to end the service of chief executive Asmah," she asked at a press conference in the Dewan Rakyat yesterday.
According to her, Asmah, who has retired from the civil service for 28 years, does not have any record of misconduct.
“She has a lot of experience in welfare and she was appointed after a four-hour interview process.
"This is a credible candidate but it is very unfortunate that she was terminated at the time the movement control order (MCO) began and that was the time YKN was busy launching a fund to provide welfare (to those in need)," Yeoh added.
For the record, Asmah was fired as the chief executive of YKN on March 30, 12 days after the MCO was first implemented.
Yeoh called for appointments to be based on merit and not politics alone.
"So I urge the ministry not to play politics and make sure the appointments are of people who are really qualified.
"If the wrong person is appointed, it will give the wrong impression," she added. - Mkini
