‘Restoring people’s mandate’ discussed at Harapan meeting

Pakatan Harapan leaders who attended a meeting at PKR’s headquarters in Petaling Jaya this evening are tight-lipped on the meeting’s discussions and described it as only an “ordinary monthly meeting”.

However, the Harapan chairperson Anwar Ibrahim said the discussions involved “restoring the people’s mandate”.

“I’ve chaired the monthly Harapan presidential council meeting this evening.

“Various issues relating to national current affairs have been discussed, in addition to efforts to restore the people’s mandate,” the opposition leader said in a Facebook post without further elaboration.

It was Harapan’s first meeting after Anwar’s announcement last week claiming that he has garnered the support of the majority of MPs to form a new government.

He had said that he sought an audience with Yang di-Pertuan Agong Sultan Abdullah Sultan Ahmad Shah but this was postponed because the king had been admitted to the National Heart Institute for health problems.

The palace said in a separate statement today the king is now undergoing follow-up treatment and is expected to return to Istana Negara soon.

Anwar was said to have arrived at the PKR headquarters at 2pm, but the meeting only started an hour later.

About one-and-half hours after the meeting began, several senior Harapan leaders, including Amanah president Mohamad Sabu, were seen leaving the building.

When met by reporters, Mohamad declined to speak about the meeting.

PKR communications chief Fahmi Fadzil and his Amanah counterpart Khalid Abd Samad also declined to speak to reporters.

PKR secretary-general Saifuddin Nasution Ismail also declined to comment, saying: “Today is just an ordinary meeting, it’s the Harapan monthly meeting. It’s nothing.”

Anwar, meanwhile, is understood to have managed to evade reporters and left the building unnoticed at about 5.30pm.

Other Harapan leaders who attended the meeting include Akmal Nasrullah Nasir, Dr Hatta Ramli, Dr Dzulkefly Ahmad, Gobind Singh Deo, Husam Musa, Anthony Loke, M Kulasegaran dan Dr Xavier Jayakumar. - Mkini
