KOTA KINABALU: A total of 3,957 mountain guides, porters, tourist drivers, divemasters and artistes affected by the current conditional movement control order will be given RM300 in assistance each.

State Tourism, Culture and Environment Minister Datuk Jafry Ariffin said the assistance was part of efforts by the government to assist this group of people whose incomes have been hard-hit by the Covid-19 pandemic.

Jafry said that his ministry was allocated RM1mil from the RM160mil set aside by the state government to provide assistance for various target groups affected by the Covid-19.

Jafry said this after meeting with Sabah Parks directors as well as representatives of mountain guides and porters’ associations at Sabah Parks headquarters in Kundasang, about 100km from here.

He said that they also discussed welfare issues pertaining to Sabah Parks staff as well as steps to be taken to improve the infrastructure for the facilities at the state parks.

“It will be part of the efforts to help improve tourism products, ” he added. - Star
