MACC hauls in cops for asking RM5,000 bribe

The policemen were alleged to have demanded money from the men for having banned items.

KOTA KINABALU: Two policemen were detained for trying to extort RM5,000 from two individuals to escape arrest for having prohibited items in Sandakan.

It was understood officers from the Sandakan branch of the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) hauled in the policemen, a sergeant and a corporal, aged 57 and 35, at 9.50pm yesterday.

It was learned the suspects had committed the act last Monday.

The policemen are alleged to have compelled the individuals to cough up the money so that action would not be taken against them for owning the banned items.

Sabah MACC director S Karunanithy confirmed the arrest, saying the case is being investigated under Section 17(a) of the MACC Act 2009. - FMT
