Umno puts off divisional meetings due to spike in Covid-19 cases

Umno secretary-general Ahmad Maslan said the party does not want to be blamed for any increase in Covid-19 cases.

PETALING JAYA: Umno today announced that its ongoing divisional delegate meetings will be postponed until further notice due to the increase in the number of Covid-19 cases.

The health ministry today announced it has detected 260 new Covid-19 cases in the past 24 hours, the highest spike in cases since the recovery movement control order (RMCO) came into effect in June.

“Umno president Ahmad Zahid Hamidi has instructed me to inform that all meetings/conferences of Women, Youth, Puteri and division delegates must be postponed immediately,” Umno secretary-general Ahmad Maslan said in a statement.

“This is due to Covid-19 cases reaching 260 today. We cannot take risks and we do not want Umno to be blamed.

“The delay will be until a date that will be announced later. These instructions must be followed.”

In a statement last month, Ahmad said the meetings would be held from Sept 27 to Nov 15 due to the Sabah state elections on Sept 26. - FMT
