KUALA LUMPUR: Free rice will be distributed every week to poor families living in the Federal Territories starting today, Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin said.
Muhyiddin said 5,750 packets of free rice will be distributed in a joint initiative by the Federal Territories ministry, Yayasan Wilayah Persekutuan and the Federal Territories Residents Representative Council.
He did not specify how much each family would receive.
Muhyiddin’s announcement came in a speech to mark Federal Territories day tomorrow. He said more than 400,000 families living in the Federal Territories are classified as members of the urban poor, after the revision of the poverty level from RM980 monthly income to RM2,208.
He said statistics from Sosco showed that 6,805 people had lost their jobs in December. “To combat this problem, the FT Ministry through their MyJob@Wilayah initiative has allocated 3,259 job vacancies in various industries,” he added. - FMT
