Umno leader backs bid to challenge Muhyiddin in Pagoh

Umno supreme council member Mohd Puad Zarkashi has backed plans by the local Umno division to field a candidate in Pagoh, the constituency held by Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin who is also the Bersatu president.

Puad said he would support Pagoh Umno's position to field a candidate in the parliamentary seat as well as its two state constituencies regardless of the circumstances.

"The resolution was made during the Pagoh Umno delegates' meeting last night.

"Pagoh Umno will submit the motion to the Umno supreme council. Congratulations Pagoh Umno," Puad said in a statement.

Bukit Kepong and Bukit Pasir are the two states seats under Pagoh which are held by Bersatu and PAS, respectively.

In the 2018 general election, Muhyiddin won the Pagoh seat with 23,558 votes against Umno's 16,631 and PAS' 2,483.

All three parties are now part of the same federal government.

However, Umno is finding itself increasingly cornered as PAS drifts towards Bersatu.

Umno had hoped to take on Bersatu with the help of PAS in the next general election but is now finding itself isolated.

This has prompted Umno to become more aggressive towards Bersatu despite being part of the same coalition government.

Yesterday, Umno Youth chief Asyraf Wajdi Dusuki accused Bersatu of "stealing and buying" its members. - Mkini
