Bersatu politician's spouse charged over cannabis plants

The spouse of a Bersatu politician was today charged with trafficking and cultivating cannabis at her plush home in Ampang, Selangor.

If found guilty of the two trafficking charges, Lyiana Roslee, 34, faces a mandatory death penalty.

The penalty for cultivation is life imprisonment and whipping of not less than six strokes of the cane.

She was accused of trafficking 1.58kg of cannabis and cultivating nine cannabis plants.

The accused was represented by Muhammad Rafique Rashid Ali and Nur Mustanir Md Nor, while Nor Shazwani Abdullah prosecuted.

The Bersatu politician was arrested on Jan 20 based on a tip-off and was allegedly in possession of illicit drugs.

Following this, his home was raided where more contraband was found. His spouse and domestic helper were then arrested.

The Bersatu politician has not been charged. He was a Bersatu candidate for a seat in Perak during the 2018 general election.

Malaysiakini is withholding the name of the politician until he is charged because he does not hold public office. - Mkini
