Covid-19 hits old folks' home in Klang, 20 infected

Twenty individuals, including 17 elderly residents and three staff members of an old folks' home in Pandamaran New Village in Klang, Selangor, have tested positive for Covid-19, according to Pandamaran assemblyperson Tony Leong Tuck Chee.

When contacted yesterday, Leong said he was informed of the outbreak by the supervisor of the Grace Old Folks Home.

"Polymerase chain reaction (PCR) tests were carried out at the old folks' home for 35 individuals, including 27 elderly residents and seven staff members. Twenty of them were detected positive for Covid-19 yesterday.

"I have contacted an officer at the Klang District Health Office, who said those infected would be sent to the hospital. But no ambulance has picked up the residents.

"I will contact the health office to make further arrangements so that the elders with comorbidity can be placed under proper medical care. The elders are at a higher risk of severe illness from Covid-19," Leong said.

He shared that he last visited the old folks' home during the Chinese New Year festival earlier this year and that the oldest resident there is 90 years old. He said most of them suffer from chronic diseases such as diabetes, high blood pressure and some of them have blurry vision.

It is believed that the residents and staff of the old folks' home were infected by workers from a church that runs the welfare home.

It was learned that the church, which is located in Taman Chi Liung in Pandamaran, has been shut down for two weeks after five pastors and two staff there were infected with Covid-19.  - Mkini
