Final call to cut ties with Bersatu must be decided by BN supreme council - MIC

MIC secretary-general M Asojan said any final decision regarding BN's stand in the 15th general election (GE15) will only be made by the BN supreme council, also comprising Umno, MCA and PBRS.

Asojan (above) also said Ahmad Zahid Hamidi's statement that BN will face the GE15 on its own was made in his capacity as Umno president.

"Whether BN will contest on its own in GE15, that will be determined by the BN supreme council.

"I believe Zahid's statement at the Umno annual general assembly that BN will contest on its own was made in his capacity as Umno president.

"The final decision must be based on the BN supreme council meeting that will be held soon," he said when commenting on Zahid's winding-up speech at the Umno AGM last weekend.

Zahid had said that Umno, as leader of BN, must win the most number of seats and emerge as the dominant party in a coalition government post-GE15.

"BN has decided to face GE15 on our own. Let me explain, once and for all, for Umno to reclaim dominance, firstly we must win the most number of seats," Zahid reportedly said.

However, Malaysiakini understands that MIC is uneasy with Zahid's decision to sever ties with Bersatu.

Sources told Malaysiakini that the issue of cooperation with Bersatu and PN will be raised at MIC's 74th annual general meeting, which begins tomorrow.

The meeting, to be held in Klang, will also be carried out online, involving close to 2,000 delegates nationwide.

By convention, the Umno president as BN chairperson will be delivering an address at the MIC AGM. - Mkini
