Labuan cops open fire in high-speed chase

Videograb shows policemen trying to arrest the suspect who rammed his car into a Labuan Corporation enforcement four-wheel drive vehicle in Labuan.

KOTA KINABALU: A man rammed his car into several enforcement vehicles and tried to run over a policeman in Labuan on Wednesday.

It is believed that he was trying to escape from being caught with his stash of eight packets of syabu.

Earlier, the 44-year-old suspect was involved in a high-speed chase with police in the town area.

A video, showing police shooting several times at the suspect’s tyre and shouting at him to get down from his vehicle, has gone viral.

Labuan acting police chief Mohd Ibrahim Mohd Ghani said the chase ensued when the suspect suddenly sped off after spotting a police patrol car at 9.30pm.

He said the car got caught in jam but the suspect rammed into a Labuan Corporation enforcement vehicle there in a desperate move to escape.

“Police moved in to arrest him but he reversed his car into a police patrol vehicle and another Labuan Corporation car behind,” he said

“We had to shoot his front tyre to stop the car from moving,” Ibrahim said.

A policeman was injured while trying to stop the car but the officers managed to arrest the man and seized the drugs in his car.

The suspect is expected to be charged with drug possession and trying to harm a policeman on duty. - FMT
