Minister assures thorough probe into teacher accused of rape joke

Education Minister Mohd Radzi Md Jidin has stressed that the ministry does not tolerate teachers who make jokes about rape.

He assured that student Ain Husniza Saiful Nizam’s recent allegation about her teacher making such offensive comments in a physical and health education class was being taken seriously.

Radzi said the ministry was investigating the case and promised “stern action” if her claim was proven.

“About the rape joke that was allegedly made by a teacher, I want to clarify that the ministry is taking this matter seriously. We cannot and will not tolerate this.

“The ministry is conducting an in-depth investigation. This has become a police case but I want to stress to the public that we are taking this seriously.

“We are conducting an in-depth investigation to assess the real situation. If we find there is a case, we will take action accordingly. Stern action will be taken in the case,” he said this afternoon during a press conference in Kuala Lumpur that was live-streamed.

Ain and her father Saiful Nizam Ab Wahab previously lodged a police report against the teacher in question.

The police have begun investigating the case by taking statements from those involved.

The 17-year-old first spoke up about her teacher in a now-viral video on the social media platform TikTok.

While her efforts have gained her tremendous public support, she has also received a rape threat from a male classmate as well as lewd comments online.

However, Saiful had said the student who made the rape threat has apologised and the matter is now considered closed.

Despite the targeted backlash, Ain has continued to campaign for the government to make school a safer place. - Mkini
