Don’t play with autonomy on MCO rules, says Sarawak DAP

Sarawak DAP chairman Chong Chieng Jen calls for an end to conflicting state and federal MCO rules.

PETALING JAYA: The Sarawak state government was urged today to come up with clear and effective rules on the forthcoming lockdown and avoid making statements that conflict with federal government rules.

Sarawak DAP chairman Chong Chieng Jen said the federal government had made several statements about movement restrictions, while the Sarawak government had also set out rules on movement restrictions in the state.

“This is not the first time that the state and the federal government have conflicting policies and SOPs despite being in the same government coalition,” he said in a statement today.

“To add more confusion to the matter, after the Sarawak disaster committee’s announcement that Sarawak will go into MCO from May 29 to June 11, Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin announced that there will be a full national lockdown from June 1 to June 14.

“Is the lockdown up to June 11 or June 14 for Sarawak?” he said.

He said the state government should not play with political autonomy, which he said was meant for the state to make better decisions for the good of the people, not create more confusion in time of an emergency.

The Sarawak government said recently it had decided not to follow the federal government’s lockdown from June 1 to June 14 but would continue with its own movement control protocols. - FMT
