Free parking in Kota Bharu during total lockdown

Roadside parking under the jurisdiction of the Kota Bharu City Council (MPKB) will be free during the total lockdown from June 1 to 14.

This is because the parking enforcement is run by a private company and its industry is not considered essential service.

The matter has not been officially announced, but the information regarding this development has been widely shared on social media.

When contacted, a representative of Vista Summerose Sdn Bhd, the company operating the service, confirmed it to be true, adding that the matter was decided by the city council.

"We will abide by MBKB's decision. During the total lockdown period, our staff will all have to work from home," branch manager Pauziah Ismail told Malaysiakini.

This news portal has reached out to MPKB for comments but was unsuccessful.

State exco member in charge of local government, housing and health Dr Izani Husin said he has not received official word on this move by MPKB.

The move is unlikely to benefit Kota Bharu folks since most businesses will be closed for two weeks beginning tomorrow.

Kelantan is currently a major Covid-19 hotspot. According to Health Minister Dr Adham Baba, the test positivity rate for Covid-19 was 11.48 percent for the period of May 23 to 29 - the highest in the country.

The state is also hampered by a relatively low number of people registering for vaccines at 34.05 percent, considerably lower than the national level of 49.9 percent. - Mkini
