PETALING JAYA: The badly damaged Jalan Maarof in Bangsar is causing concern for road users and residents in the area.
They fear more parts of the road may be damaged in the days to come as a result of thunderstorms lashing the city almost every evening.
They want Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL) to immediately carry out repairs and explain why this major road was so badly damaged all of a sudden.
“We want repairs to be carried out as quickly as possible as this road has heavy traffic and its closure will cause massive traffic jams in this part of the city,” said resident M Sivabalan.
Police and DBKL have closed off a major section of Jalan Maarof to do further assessment and carry out remedial work.
Lembah Pantai MP Fahmi Fadzil, who was at the scene last night, tweeted that the road was damaged at numerous points between Public Bank and Maybank. He believed this was due to water flowing beneath the road surface after a culvert wall collapsed.
He advised motorists to avoid Jalan Maarof and use alternative routes as repair works were expected to “take a few weeks if not months”.
In a statement today, the Save KL Coalition (SKL) had asked the city mayor to explain preventive maintenance measures DBKL would take to ensure Jalan Maarof and adjoining roads will be safe for motorists.
SKL chairman M Ali wanted to know how often the underground monsoon drains were inspected and the status of a large Air Selangor water pipe running along the stretch of road.
He wanted to know whether the road contractor had fully satisfied DBKL specifications.
He warned that “blind development without any consideration for water dispersal” could damage roads.
