Lockdown: Govt should give B60 families RM1.5k monthly - Anwar

PKR president Anwar Ibrahim has urged the government to give tangible immediate aid to the people, and not tout an aid package with "imaginary numbers".

He suggested the government give each family in the bottom 60 percent of income earners (B60) a minimum of RM1,500 each month until the lockdown ends.

"There must be direct (continuous) injection to each (B60) family. It can't be a one-off," he said in a Facebook live talk today.

Anwar (above) was commenting on the current financial situation.

Putrajaya on Monday unveiled a RM150 billion aid package dubbed Pemulih.

However, Anwar pointed out that the government's own fiscal injection is just RM10 billion.

The rest, he said, came from banks via loan moratoriums, and "the people's money" - referring to EPF withdrawals through the i-Citra scheme.

Commenting on the loan moratoriums, Anwar said the government must ensure that those who opt to defer repayments must not be punished with interest and loan tenures being extended longer than the period of deferment.

"If it's really about saving the people, everyone has to struggle a little.

"Banks can't be allowed to make billions in profits while the people have no jobs, can't eat," he said.

The Port Dickson MP also took aim at the government's plan to disburse monetary aid under Bantuan Khas Covid-19 (BKC) starting only in August.

"What are (the people) going to eat in July?" he asked. - Mkini
