Welfare minister gives thumbs up for 'white flag' movement

The cabinet minister in charge of welfare Rina Harun today expressed her appreciation and support for the "white flag" movement, which urges those who need financial help to display it at their house.

She reportedly told a press conference in Putrajaya today that such a campaign can help inculcate the public to become more empathetic towards others.

"We are now at war and there is no other way than helping each other," she said today, as quoted by local Malay daily Sinar Harian.

Rina (above) is the women, family and community development minister, who oversees the Welfare Department, among others.

According to her, the ministry had distributed over 1.5 million food baskets and believed that some who need the assistance may have been accidentally left out.

Rina said the initiative had benefited some six million households, in a country with a population of 32 million.

"Maybe some of them, when we distributed the aid, they still had a job but a week later they lost it. Or maybe the women lost their husband due to Covid-19, we do not know," she reportedly said.

The white flag movement was started earlier this week and had since gained traction online.

The movement calls for anyone in desperation to survive during the pandemic to display a white flag, as a signal to others that they have run out of food and in need of immediate assistance.

Since it started gaining steam online, netizens had shared multiple stories on social media showing assistance flowing to help those who had flown the white flag at their houses. - Mkini
