Selangor MB to meet PKR leaders over forest reserve de-gazettement - Anwar

PKR president Anwar Ibrahim has requested an explanation from Selangor Menteri Besar Amirudin Shari regarding the state's move to approve the de-gazettement of the Kuala Langat North Forest Reserve.

Anwar, in a Facebook post, said Amirudin, a PKR state assemblyperson, is expected to meet party leaders tomorrow and provide a detailed explanation on the move announced in the Selangor state assembly.

"I take into account that the Selangor state assembly had (last year) opposed the plan.

"I would like to stress the decision made has yet to be informed to the PKR leadership.

"In fact, PKR leaders had since last year informed the menteri besar to cancel the plan," said the Port Dickson MP.

He was responding to reported outcries, including from Selangor Pakatan Harapan backbenchers, over the state government's move to approve the de-gazettement of the Kuala Langat North Forest Reserve for mixed-commercial development projects.

Within the Selangor state assembly, several Harapan backbenchers had called on the government to reverse its decision involving 506.3ha of forest reserves.

Earlier today, several PKR lawmakers had also voiced their objections to the de-gazettement.

Other than politicians, two environmental groups have also strongly condemned the Selangor government, highlighting the lack of transparency and accountability behind the decision.

It was revealed during question time at the Selangor legislative assembly yesterday that the state government had quietly de-gazetted 54 percent of the Kuala Langat North Forest Reserve as a permanent reserve in May.

This move will allow 536.7ha from the 991.9ha forest to be exploited. - Mkini
