PETALING JAYA: The Attorney-General’s Chambers (AGC) is going through investigation papers submitted by the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) yesterday over the money which was allegedly taken from the US$6.94 million seized from former Malaysian External Intelligence Organisation director-general Hasanah Abdul Hamid.

The AGC in a brief statement said the prosecution division would study the papers in detail before deciding whether to prosecute anyone or issue an order for further investigation.

The head of prosecution in the AGC, Nik Suhaimi Nik Sulaiman confirmed with FMT that the investigation was also in connection with Hasanah and three MACC officers.

Last week, it was reported that the MACC had arrested the officers to assist in investigations into allegations of abuse of power and malpractice in the case involving “a former department head”.

The officers were brought before the Putrajaya magistrates’ court and remanded under Section 117 of the Criminal Procedure Code for six days from Sept 14-19.

MACC then said a thorough investigation was underway.

A blog post, Edisi Siasat had earlier claimed that the police were “afraid” to investigate reports against the three MACC officers for allegedly stealing confiscated money.

It claimed that Hasanah had tried to reclaim the cash that was confiscated from a Cyberjaya apartment after she was granted a discharge not amounting to an acquittal in her criminal breach of trust (CBT) case in April.

According to the blog, Hasanah had claimed that a portion of the cash was missing and had been replaced with counterfeit notes, and that she had made a report on the matter.

The three suspects were part of a special team assigned to probe the allegations of power abuse and malpractice involving Hasanah. - FMT
