Beware the ‘political oligarchs’, warns Amanah MP

Mujahid Yusof Rawa says the political oligarchs are a huge obstacle in realising the visions in the 12th Malaysia Plan.

KUALA LUMPUR: An Amanah MP has warned the county of the existence of a small group of “political oligarchs” who are attempting to destroy the nation with their brand of politics.

This “political oligarchs”, according to Mujahid Yusof Rawa (PH-Parit Buntar), is a huge obstacle in realising the visions outlined in the 12th Malaysia Plan (12MP) because they have massive influence in determining the direction of Malaysian politics.

Mujahid added that these oligarchs hinder the efforts to democratise society and introduce social justice.

“They are detrimental to the nation’s success since they undermine the efforts to democratise society and introduce social justice just to protect their political interests. They will become powerful when they have pawns to exploit,” Mujahid said when debating the 12MP at the Dewan Rakyat today.

He called for the strengthening of Malaysia’s democracy and rule of law to defeat this group of people.

Mujahid also called for a study to measure the successes of past development plans, going back to the 6th Malaysia Plan that first outlined Vision 2020.

This study, according to Mujahid, was necessary since he felt that the execution of the past national plans had failed in achieving the targets set out for Vision 2020.

“A more tolerant and democratic society was envisioned in Vision 2020 but if we look at what we are facing right now, Malaysians are being swayed by race and religious rhetoric. We are still far away from realising the vision.”

Vision 2020, or Wawasan 2020, was a national vision set by the fourth and seventh prime minister, Dr Mahathir Mohamad, in the 6th Malaysia Plan in 1991 for Malaysia to achieve self-sufficient industrialised status by 2020.

The Vision encompassed all aspects of life, from economic prosperity and social well-being to world-class education and political stability. - FMT
