NRD passes data leak hot potato to IRB

The National Registration Department (NRD) today said there are no data leaks due to its systems as alleged on a hacker forum.

In a statement today, Home Minister Hamzah Zainuddin said his ministry will also ensure that personal data held by the NRD was secure.

Hamzah was referring to an advertisement that appeared on raidforums.com - a website famous for high-profile leaks of personal identification information (PII) databases.

The advertisement in question claimed that a database containing NRD records of 4 million people born between 1979 and 1998 could be purchased for 0.2 bitcoins.

The seller claims dataset was obtained from “hasil.gov.my through the MyIdentity API”.

Hamzah said the NRD has informed the Inland Revenue Board of the matter and urged the latter to investigate if there was a leak on their end.

Yesterday, the IRB has denied that it has anything to do with the leak.

Hamzah added that the NRD has lodged reports with the police and the Multimedia and Communications Commission on Sept 27 and Sept 28 respectively.

“Discussions with the National Cyber Coordination And Command Centre (NC4) and IRB were also held yesterday.

“Among other matters, the MyIdentity method of sharing information with the IRB was discussed,” he said.

The MyIdentity system was developed by the Malaysian Administrative Modernisation and Management Planning Unit (Mampu) - an agency under the prime minister’s office - in 2011.

MyIdentity allows personal identification to be shared across several government agencies.

Hamzah said his ministry will ensure that every government agency which uses the MyIdentity data will take immediate action to ensure that the data is not compromised. - Mkini
