Selangor govt wants more schools built in urban areas

The Selangor state government has urged the federal administration to increase the number of schools in cities, especially those with high population density, said Menteri Besar Amirudin Shari.

“We hope the facilities of these schools will be reviewed as the number of students in each classroom in urban areas is worrying as it is more than what's recommended.

“Sometimes (there are) over 50 students in a classroom,” he said.

Amirudin (above) was speaking to reporters after a ceremony with Kumpulan Semesta Sdn Bhd and the state government in Shah Alam today.

He was commenting on the 12th Malaysia Plan (12MP) tabled by Prime Minister Ismail Sabri Yaakob on Monday.

Amirudin said the situation has affected the learning environment of students and the current pandemic also showed it is important to provide good ventilation in classrooms.

He revealed that new school sites had been provided and were handed over by the state to the federal government.

He hoped the construction of new schools will be carried out soon to cater to the high demand.

“For example, at Elmina (in Shah Alam), the population is estimated at 50,000 people, and there are five school sites in that area, but not a single school has been built, and the children have to go to school in Subang Bestari.

“This causes congestion and the quality of education in each class is affected. I hope the matter would be expedited,” he added.
