Covid-19Malacca polls: Umno to continue working with PAS

The Umno supreme council has decided that the party will continue its cooperation with PAS in the upcoming Malacca election, said Umno secretary-general Ahmad Maslan.

He said this is in keeping with the Umno general assembly decision last year, where the party’s highest decision-making body endorsed strengthening ties with Muafakat Nasional.

“The basis of the mutual understanding with PAS is based on the principle that PAS uses its own party logo in line with the spirit and decision of the Muafakat Steering Committee in meetings held on Oct 19 and Nov 18, 2020.

“This is to avoid clashes among ourselves while maintaining the use of our respective party logos in elections,” he said in a statement today, following tonight’s supreme council meeting chaired by party president Ahmad Zahid Hamidi.

The council also appointed party deputy president Mohamad Hasan as Umno’s election director for the state election, while party vice-president and Prime Minister Ismail Sabri Yaakob has been given the mandate to make any decision related to the election.

Nomination day for the Malacca election is slated for Nov 8, while polling will be held on Nov 20.

Umno Youth chief Asyraf Wajdi Dusuki earlier said that the Umno grassroots is in favour of collaborating with PAS, but whether this comes to fruition depends on PAS.

The two parties had previously signed an electoral pact in September 2019, which held together in four subsequent by-elections.

For the upcoming state election, however, PAS has committed to participate under the Perikatan Nasional (PN) coalition, of which Umno is not a member.

During an Umno general assembly in March, its delegates already decided the party should not collaborate in an electoral pact with Bersatu - PN's lynchpin.

Zahid had emphasised this point during the launch of the Malacca election machinery yesterday, saying that Umno will not cooperate with Bersatu in the state in line with the general assembly’s wishes.

Earlier, PN chairperson Muhyiddin Yassin had announced that Bersatu, PAS, and Gerakan had agreed to contest under the coalitions logo in the upcoming state election.

However, PAS central committee member Mohd Zuhdi Marsuki said a day later the matter must still be deliberated by his party's central committee and syura council, to decide whether it agrees with the PN supreme council decision. - Mkini
