Umno veep calls for Malacca to emulate spirit of Putrajaya-Harapan MOU

Umno vice-president Mahdzir Khalid has called on politicians in Malacca to keep calm.

Mahdzir, who is also the rural development minister, said politicians in the state should emulate the memorandum of understanding (MOU) between the federal government and Pakatan Harapan.

“At the federal level there is already collaboration between the government and opposition via an MOU, I hope the states can emulate that.

“There is no need to be helter-skelter right now, to keep fighting. The match is over. this isn’t a football match where there are 90 minutes (to win),” he was quoted as saying by Astro Awani today.

Malacca politics is on a knife’s edge after speculation arose that four lawmakers aligned to the state government were planning a coup.

The quartet, allegedly led by former chief minister Idris Haron, is reportedly seeking support from Harapan to make him the next chief minister.

The other alleged conspirators are reportedly Nor Azman Hassan (Umno-Pantai Kundor), Noor Effendi Ahmad (Bersatu-Telok Mas), and Norhizam Hassan Baktee (Independent-Pengkalan Batu).

Noor Effendi and Norhizam were previously with Harapan. Their defection helped contribute to the coalition's downfall in Malacca.

Mahdzir said those involved in the alleged plot should think it through and maintain the current state government headed by Chief Minister Sulaiman Md Ali.

“At most, in about a year from now, there will be a general election. There is no need to be in a rush,” he added.

He said all should heed the Yang di-Pertuan Agong’s decree for political stability and for politicians to focus on combating Covid-19. - Mkini
