Anwar most qualified to lead opposition - Batu MP

Opposition leader Anwar Ibrahim remains the most qualified person to lead Pakatan Harapan, said Batu MP P Prabakaran.

This came after calls for the PKR president to step down as opposition leader emerged due to Harapan's poor performance in the recent Malacca polls, which saw the coalition winning only five out of the 28 seats contested.

“Aside from (former prime minister) Dr Mahathir Mohamad, the leader who is most well-known internationally is none other than Anwar.

“I am sure many will agree that there is no opposition leader candidate who has more calibre and influence than Anwar.

“I think Anwar does not have any problem for someone else to become the opposition leader as long as the reform agenda is being fought. But which other leader has as clear a reformation vision as him?” Prabakaran said in a statement today.

He pointed out that the Reformasi movement started by Anwar is what led to Harapan winning the 14th general election.

While there are many reasons why Harapan won the last general election, he said one of the factors was the rakyat’s wish for institutional reform.

“Today we see all sorts of discourse about institutional reform and how to get rid of corruption.

“If it wasn’t for Anwar who fought tirelessly for institutional reforms, we would surely still be stuck with an outdated administrative system that practices the race-based divide-and-conquer policy,” added Prabakaran, who won his seat in the last general election as an independent with PKR’s support and later joined the party.

Father of Reformation

He said many leaders were born throughout the reformation process that is still ongoing.

Yet because of one “embarrassing” loss, there are so many people claiming Anwar is no longer qualified to lead the opposition, he lamented.

“Where is the proof that Anwar is not qualified? Seeing as it is due to his suffering and sacrifices that the opposition is acknowledged and feared for the first time in this country’s history,” Prabakaran said, referring to Anwar as the country’s Father of Reformation.

As such, Prabakaran urged all Harapan leaders to close ranks, reflect and continue fighting for the people and country.

“Without a strong opposition, our country will be easily toyed with by power-hungry individuals.

“Let us not give up on the person who has never given up in fighting for the Reformasi agenda,” he added. - Mkini
