Ex-minister Jamil Khir appointed as PM's religious advisor

Kedah Umno chief Jamil Khir Baharom has been appointed as Prime Minister Ismail Sabri Yaakob's religious advisor.

A poster congratulating him on the appointment was posted on the Kedah Umno Facebook page and shared by several state party leaders including Sungai Petani division chief Shahanim Mohamad Yusoff and former Langkawi MP Nawawi Ahmad.

Jamil (above) confirmed his appointment with FMT but did not disclose any details other than that he would advise Ismail Sabri on religious affairs.

It is unclear when he was appointed to the post.

Earlier on Nov 10, it was revealed that Ismail Sabri had three advisors, who cost RM50,000 a month each including their staff.

The advisors were for health, religion as well as law and human rights.

At the time, only the law and human rights advisor's identity - Pengerang MP Azalina Othman Said - was known.

Jamil was formerly the religious affairs minister during the Najib Abdul Razak administration.

His presence in national politics waned after he lost the Jerai parliamentary seat to PAS in 2018.
