Group holds programme to empower 70 Indian youths

An Indian youth group is holding a three-month programme to empower 70 representatives from various backgrounds and ideologies to discuss, debate, and approve proposals related to national policy, law and Indian society.

In a statement today, youth organisation Dewan Belia India Malaysia (DBIM) said the programme will be attended by Indian youths aged 16 to 30 between November and January 2022.

"This programme is held in a hybrid mode for the first time in Malaysia, especially for Indian youths to channel opinions and suggestions on national policies and politics," said DBIM programme director Kiran Raj Sathivel (above).

"We will focus on tabling the motions for five specific ministries including the Youth and Sports Ministry and Education Ministry during the conference which will be held virtually," he said.

"The programme is held in the wake of the lack of awareness of the democratic process and political apathy among young people.

"In addition, the issue of socio-economic development of the Indian community, especially low-income families (B40) also did not improve due to policy and development plans that did not fall in line with the needs of the Indian community in terms of implementation and economic empowerment.

"We want to change the political landscape through this programme by practising a bipartisan approach in order to cultivate leadership skills, political awareness and activism among Indian youths in Malaysia," he said.

The event was organised by an independent secretariat together with Undi18 as an organising partner while the secretariat is spearheaded by Kiran.

It was supported by Architects of Diversity (AOD), Project 57, Gerakan Belia Se-Punjabi Malaysia (GBSM), Enlight Malaysia and others.

A total of eight community leaders, namely PKR's Batu MP P Prabakaran, Undi18 advocacy director Tharma Pillai, DAP's Batu Kawan MP Kasthuriraani Patto, former BN Cameron Highlands MP C Sivarraajh, PSM central committee member Sharan Raj and Muda vice-president Thanussha Francis Xavier will speak at the programme. - Mkini
