Minister cites self-regulation after MP complains about sex, LGBT scenes on Netflix

PARLIAMENT | Communications and Multimedia Minister Annuar Musa told the Dewan Rakyat that the Netflix app has its own built-in system that filters content by category after Wan Hassan Mohd Ramli (Dungun-PAS) complained about sexual as well as lesbian, gay, bisexual and transexual (LGBT) content on the streaming service.

Wan Hassan wanted to know what measures the government was taking to curb such content on streaming services.

Annuar (above) explained that streaming services such as Netflix was based overseas and all countries, including Malaysia, face difficulty in trying to regulate their content.

"However, there are certain measures that can be taken. For our country, Netflix generally has a number of categories that users can voluntarily set to determine the suitable content based on age group.

"Netflix also provides parental control where a password can be set to prevent children from watching films from categories that do not suit them.

"These are all self-control measures as we (government) do not have a tool to control them," he said, adding that the content of such services does not fall under the jurisdiction of existing laws.

Wan Hassan then asked if the government planned to limit the number of streaming services in Malaysia to better control them.

Annuar said the government was looking for suitable regulation and is adopting an advocacy approach.

"For now, we have plans that are advocacy in nature... There are gaming, gambling and multimedia content online, some of which goes against our culture but our laws are only for those registered in our country.

"For global internet services, we still do not have a mechanism. If we feel there is something that we really cannot air in our country, the MCMC will make an application and discuss it with them," he said. - Mkini
