Deputy state secretary takes over as Seberang Perai mayor

GEORGE TOWN: Deputy state secretary Azhar Arshad will be installed as the Seberang Perai City Council (MBSP) mayor tomorrow.

Azhar will replace Rozali Mohamud, whose contract as mayor ends today. Rozali has been council president since 2017, when Seberang Perai was a municipality,and was appointed mayor in 2019 when it was elevated to city council.

In a statement, chief minister Chow Kon Yeow said Azhar, 55, who is the deputy state secretary in charge of development, will be on loan to MBSP for two years, with an option of renewing his term for an additional year.

Azhar had previously served in the information ministry and several district and land offices in Pahang before moving to the state secretary’s office here in November 2018.

MBSP is the country’s largest local government by administrative size, covering 747 sq km. Seberang Perai comprises three towns on the mainland – Butterworth, Bukit Mertajam and Nibong Tebal. - FMT
