Floods hit Jeli even before Met Dept red alert

 

Heavy rain since last night has caused flooding in several parts of the Jeli district in Kelantan.

According to the Disaster Information website by the Social Welfare Department, as of 1pm today, six relief centres have been set up to house 561 flood victims.

There have been reports of minor flooding in the Jeli area over the past week, but the flooding now is far more severe.

While the Meteorological Department had warned that heavy rain was to be expected on the east coast of Peninsular Malaysia, a red alert for Jeli could only be issued at 11.21am today.

The department has previously forecasted heavy rain along the east coast of Peninsular Malaysia and some parts of Sabah will persist until this weekend.

Meanwhile, rescuers managed to free two senior citizens and a disabled person who was trapped in Kampung Baru Jalan Malaysia in Jeli.

Jeli Fire and Rescue Department chief Mohd Adni Ibrahim said his team received a distress call at 8am today and the rescue was conducted with a 4WD vehicle.

"We had to use a rope to bring them to safety. We ferried them on our vehicle to a safe location.

"The heavy rain had caused several villages to be flooded. Among the flooded areas are Sungai Satan, Bukit Lakota, Lubok Bongor, Pasir Dusun and Gemang," he said when contacted.

Large parts of Selangor and Pahang are still recovering from massive flooding which occurred two weekends ago. - Mkini
