PSC members want MACC chief Azam Baki investigated

Two members of the Parliamentary Special Select Committee for Agencies under the Prime Minister's Department today called for the body to investigate MACC chief commissioner Azam Baki over recent allegations against him.

In a joint statement, Kota Melaka MP Khoo Poay Tiong and Kota Kinabalu MP Chan Foong Hin said the committee should convene a meeting and summon Azam (above) to testify before them.

"The special select committee must give attention to the allegations against Azam. Thus, a special select committee meeting has to be called to summon the MACC chief to give his statement regarding the allegations," the statement added.

Khoo and Chan said they have brought up the suggestion to call Azam for questioning to all other members of the PSC, including its chairperson Abdul Latiff Abdul Rahman, who is Kuala Krai MP.

"We hope that this suggestion would be received positively by all seven other members of the PSC, so then we can prepare a report from the investigation together with proposals on how things can be improved, which can be tabled when the Parliament sits between Feb 28 and March 24, 2022."

Recently, allegations have surfaced that Azam owned close to two million shares in a publicly listed company. It was also alleged that he had failed to disclose it to the government.

It was reported that the issue had also led to a member of the MACC's Consultation and Corruption Prevention Panel resigning in protest over the oversight body's alleged inaction in the issue.

Edmund Terence Gomez had tendered his resignation from the panel, claiming that chairperson Borhan Dollah did not respond to his requests for the panel to convene a meeting about allegations against Azam.

Previously, Sungai Buloh MP R Sivarasa had also filed an urgent motion seeking the Dewan Rakyat to discuss Azam's alleged ownership of the shares.
