Storms expected in northern Peninsular states from tomorrow

The Meteorological Department has urged people in Northern Peninsular states to be on alert as a low-pressure weather system heads towards the northern entrance of the Straits of Malacca.

It said the probability of the system developing into a tropical depression is low but will nonetheless bring thunderstorms and squall lines to the region on Tuesday and Wednesday.

“Therefore, people in the affected areas are advised to be on alert.

“The (Meteorological Department) will constantly monitor the weather situation and issue a continuous rain warning if the need arises,” it said in a statement today.

The tropical disturbance identified as Invest 94B (above) is currently in the Andaman Sea near the northern tip of Sumatra and heading eastward.

The warning comes just days after the Tropical Depression 29W made landfall near Kuantan.

Parts of Central Malaysia particularly in Pahang and Selangor are still reeling from the resulting floods, with 41,418 people evacuated to temporary relief centres as of noon today.

According to the National Disaster Management Agency, 18,149 of these are in Selangor and 17,181 are in Pahang. - Mkini
