JOHOR BAHRU: All candidates in the Johor state elections, including the opposition, can use the channels provided by Radio Televisyen Malaysia (RTM) to introduce themselves to the voters.
Communications and multimedia minister Annuar Musa said the initiative was to complement efforts towards developing a “mature democratic process”.
“All candidates will receive equal treatment. As in the Melaka elections, independent candidates and those from the opposition will be given the same opportunity to introduce themselves.
“The people have the right to get to know them and make their own choices. So, there should be no problem,” he told reporters after an interview with Johor FM today.
Also present were Bernama CEO Mokhtar Hussain and director-general of broadcasting Che Roslan Che Daud.
Annuar said RTM, particularly television and radio channels such as Johor FM, could air suitable programmes during the state elections, especially after nominations.
“It could disseminate information on the candidates so they are better known to the people. We also understand that Covid-19 SOPs will place limitations on the candidates.”
The Election Commission is expected to announce the date for the 15th Johor state elections after a special meeting on Feb 9. - FMT
